Patient Entertainment System Video Case Study
The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s leading cancer centres providing highly specialist cancer care from three sites to a population of 2.4m people across Cheshire, Merseyside and the surrounding areas.
The Trust is digitally mature and nationally recognised as one of 44 Trusts who are part of the Global Digital Exemplar (GDE) programme.
Building on their Digital Patient and Agile Clinician strategy, the Trust were looking to introduce a patient information and entertainment system at their new flagship 110-bed site in Liverpool.
Watch the video to see how we helped the Trust implement a new patient information and entertainment system to support patient recovery and aid workflow.
Customer feedback
Some of the key feedback we received from the staff after the project was implemented.

On a daily basis, the patients can access the television, there’s also some relaxation music and images. That’s really important for patients, to take away some of the anxiety they might feel, which has a knock-on effect as well sometimes for patients reducing their pain levels.
Claire Smith, Quality Improvement Lead

It was vital we had a system that was free of charge for our patients. Equally important for us was finding a supplier in Parity Medical that we could work with to provide that.
Kirsteen Scowcroft, Business Change Manager

Patient Experience is our utmost priority and we are proud to have worked with Parity Medical to provide this service to the people with cancer that we care for.
Sarah Barr, Chief Information Officer

Smart Nurse Call to improve workflow
Free to use patient entertainment, maximising user adoption and supporting patient recovery
A supplier partnership that benefitted patients
A patient-centred project
The Trust chose us as a strategic partner as they could select certain project management benefits to suit them.

Phased approach
In order to ensure a smooth roll-out at a brand new hospital, we were able to offer a completely phased approach, allowing the Trust more time to organise the implementation and take into consideration what they needed.

Bespoke software
The system was completely personalised for the Trust, and we were able to make changes to the look and feel of CompanionWave, including changes to reflect the Trust’s branding, access to documents on their system and even icons that they preferred.

Focus group meetings
We met with patients and staff at the Trust to gather feedback and determine changes to the system before we went live.

Site survey and installation
We carried out a detailed site survey to identify access points, test existing infrastructure and identify installation requirements and area access constraints. The installation of the system was then carried out using our own experienced engineers and IT team, who were able to set up the required integration for the system.

Full project management
We combined our project management expertise and best practices with the Trust’s workflow and strategy for a smooth roll-out.
CompanionWave
So much more than patient entertainment
At Clatterbridge, CompanionWave is free to use for patients, providing an easy to use and intuitive system. It has a content management system so that the Trust can update information regularly. It’s accessed by patients through a total of 141 Philips MediaSuite Pro displays in four sizes (19”, 32”, 43” and 50”). Each inpatient room includes either a 32” or 43” wall-mounted display, with smaller touchscreens on articulating arms for use in day care areas. Inpatient rooms also feature a specifically-designed healthcare remote for infection control management.

CompanionWave Software
Patients will benefit from free access to Freeview TV, entertainment and care information through our CompanionWave system. In addition to live TV and radio at any time of day, CompanionWave offers access to ward, staff and meal menu information, a language translation feature and games and relaxation videos, all entirely free of charge to patients

Large Format 43″ Philips Smart TVs
Wall-mounted in each patient room, the Philips Smart TVs provide patients with access to Freeview TV, radio channels and the hospital radio as well as the ability to view treatment information. A hygienic Philips healthcare remote also allows patients to adjust the TV without having to leave their bed.

19″ Philips Smart TVs
Primarily for day case areas, the smaller Philips Smart TV was mounted on articulated arms so that patients could access while in bed. These came with the same functionality of the larger TVs, as well as having the added feature of integrated, easy to use buttons on the TV itself.
