A heartfelt gaming kart gift offers relief to Great Ormond Street Hospital patients

In January, we were honoured to be part of an extraordinary personal gift to patients at Great Ormond Street Hospital‘s (GOSH) Safari Day Care.

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare when their child becomes seriously ill and they’re referred to hospital specialists for tests, scans and a biopsy. That’s exactly what one of our customers, Jamie Bagge, went through recently, and he describes the experience of waiting to hear the results to find out if his son, Alfie, had cancer as “scary” and “heart-wrenching”.

Fortunately, the eventual diagnosis was a rare infection, which was successfully treated after lots of tests, appointments and medication — but it was a long and stressful wait to discover that eventual diagnosis. During one appointment, while they were waiting for a biopsy to take place, Alfie was lucky enough to be offered a gaming kart to play. The two of them played games all day while they waited and it helped to take their mind off things, which was a welcome relief.

Realising the benefit that the distraction had provided to their family during such a time of anxiety, Jamie’s family decided to raise money through a Christmas light fundraiser to buy another gaming kart for the Safari ward. “We felt so strongly with the cause that we personally donated a big amount to the kart, but we needed the help of family friends and people we don’t know to try and raise enough money to purchase a gaming kart.”

The fundraiser was a success! The family raised enough money for a gaming kart and came to us for help in making their wish happen. We were only too happy to help and were able to put them in touch with Get Well Gamers, who agreed to donate a Playstation console as part of the gift. We joined the Bagge family at Great Ormond Street Hospital on 23 January, when they presented their heartfelt gift to the team at the Safari Day Care ward.

We’re delighted to hear that the Bagge family had a happy result at the end of such a worrying time. But, as Jamie says, “for many, that isn’t possible.” We wish Alfie all the best in his ongoing recovery and hope that GOSH’s new gaming kart can bring hours of distraction and relief to other patients who are waiting for results or undergoing treatment in the future.
